There’s plenty of smoke and mirrors about the issue of ‘DPF fitted’ diesel.
A filter for an exhaust that is fitted to most diesel vehicles of late models is called DPF. It is used to remove toxic gasses, like fuels, hydrocarbons lubricants, and water and sulfates. These substances attach to soot and can form harmful particles, in the exhaust of diesel engines.
The dangerous gasses can result from several factors such as improper or inadequate maintenance, low-quality fuel, bad driving habits, and poor combustion. The filter, also known as the DPF filter, is designed to capture the particles. It can then be regenerated by high-temperature heat burns. Problems occur because the regeneration process fails or the filter gets clogged.
The diesel particulate filter is described as a complex and expensive component that needs to be replaced which in my experience is not true.

- If a DPF fault is detected, it DOES not necessarily mean that it means that the DPF has been blocked.
What are the symptoms of obstruction of DPF?
There are a variety of signs that could be experienced when your DPF becomes clogged and/or needs to be cleaned (not necessarily ready to go to the scrap pile).
- Surging/poor performance.
- Excessive fuel consumption.
- Excessive smoking blue, black or white.
- Display of the engine or DPF emissions light.
- Difficulty starting the engine.
- The engine runs rough.
- Regeneration attempts have not been successful.
What are the definitions of regenerations?
The vehicle’s computer-embedded algorithms carry out periodic renewals (burns) which is a procedure that increases the temperature in the exhaust and ‘burns away the soot and particles collected in the filter. If a component fails to function properly it could cause an increase in the number of regenerations or even stop them entirely until the issue is fixed. The exhaust can create an excessive amount of black smoke when it is regenerated. It is safe. Smoke that is constantly blowing can indicate a problem.

How can DPF blockage or failure be prevented?
- Make sure that your mechanic is aware of how to handle diesel.
- Beware of inexact oil and missing services
Beware of driving while you have a fault in your car (dash warning light). - Avoid diesel fuel that is of low quality. Modify your vehicle cautiously DPF habits of driving – I reduce idling and increase rpm under loads (dropping the speed) particularly when crawling.
- Help your mechanic understand changes with your vehicle like more raucous whistles, hissing sounds, or a jerking feeling while driving. This could lead to the DPF not being replenished.
- You should avoid using “on car intake and induction cleaners” even the recommendation of your mechanic these products. They can damage DPF’s and other important components.
- Failures of components that cause DPF faults don’t necessarily result in the DPF requiring replacement.
- Maintained DPF can travel up to 200,000 km before needing to be taken off for cleaning or replacement.
How much does it cost for a DPF to be cleaned or replaced?
First, a warning: DPF repair MUST be done by a qualified mechanic who uses the correct tools to reset and replace DPF. Once the fault has been verified after which the DPF should either be cleaned or removed by the DPF cleaning service. The top DPF cleaning firms should have a minimum of five years of cleaning success.
They can also determine if the DPF is actually damaged internally. To find out if the DPF is blocked, a mechanic can inspect the vehicle and check all DPF parts, which he can replace if needed. They are unable to confirm whether or not the DPF has collapsed or melted internally, causing the blockage.

Manufacturers vary their designs frequently It is therefore difficult to determine which brand of DPF is used on each car model. The DPF is considered to be the most strictly controlled component of motor vehicles. They do not disclose the name of the DPF manufacturer.
